Iconic bushranger Ned Kelly is the subject of a new Australian opera.
Lost & Found presents unusual operas in found spaces. Founded in 2013 this Perth-based company produces and tours work on a scale that integrates the audience, performance and environment. By collaborating with artists from a range of disciplines Lost & Found creates work that extends the boundaries of operatic form and language and speaks to the human condition.
Lost & Found has been hailed as ‘the nation’s most innovative opera company’ (Opera Magazine) and ‘one of the few genuinely disruptive arts organisations in Australia’ (The West Australian) and has quickly established an excellent reputation for producing high-quality work.
In 2019 Lost & Found will bring its goal of finding new audiences for opera in found spaces to the production of a new commission. Ned Kelly (working title) explores the theme of Australian identity through less well-known elements of the iconic Ned Kelly story, building on a central theme of gender roles, cross dressing and dressing up.
Australian composer Luke Styles and Australian librettist Peter Goldsworthy will be in town during Perth Festival to work with the Lost & Found team and performers to refine and develop the new opera through workshop. This Perth Works showing will be a sharing of some of that work and a thematic presentation on the new opera ahead of its full production in 2019.
Lost and Found Opera is supported by the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Major Festivals Initiative in association with the Confederation of Australian International Arts Festivals Inc
