Early this week acclaimed French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet shared his experience and exceptional knowledge of French music interpretation with students from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Assisting and advising three of WAAPA’s most advanced piano students on works by Debussy, Balakirev and Bortkiewicz, this masterful pianist managed to effortlessly entertain and inform in a rare masterclass opportunity.
Monsieur Bavouzet gave each student a jam-packed and enthusiastic analysis of their technique and musical ability, and was able to impart valuable insights that only a seasoned interpreter of the instrument could make. He spoke frankly and honestly to each student about their faults, and also gave high praise for the advanced repertoire they had selected to perform. He also praised the quality of teaching at WAAPA, especially from Ms Anna Sleptsova, Head of Keyboard Studies.
Everything Bavouzet does, whether playing, teaching or communicating, is filled with verve and vigour and 150% passion. The mark of a truly great musician is that he enjoyed the masterclass immensely and remained in the venue long after the audience had departed to continue to teach and demonstrate to the lucky students.
